The UK draws a clear line between front and rear: front side windows must let through at least 70% VLT, which is nearly clear, while everything behind the driver's door is completely unrestricted. In practice this means you can go very dark on rear side and rear windows without any legal issue at all. The rules are the same across all four nations, which keeps things simple regardless of where in the UK you're registered.
First Offense

Repeat Offense

Your car's factory glass already blocks some light (usually around 70-80% VLT). When you add tint film, the combined VLT is lower than the film alone. For example, 35% film on 75% factory glass gives you about 26% combined VLT. The calculator above does this math for you.
