Iowa is one of the stricter states with a 70% VLT requirement on front side windows, meaning virtually no aftermarket film can legally go there. The good news is that back side and rear windows are unrestricted on both sedans and SUVs, so you can go very dark in the rear. Strategy here is clear fronts and dark rears, which is exactly what most buyers in warmer climates prefer anyway.

Your car's factory glass already blocks some light (usually around 70-80% VLT). When you add tint film, the combined VLT is lower than the film alone. For example, 35% film on 75% factory glass gives you about 26% combined VLT. The calculator above does this math for you.
