What is a VIN number?

A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a 17-character code assigned to every motor vehicle when it is built. No two vehicles share the same VIN. It works like a fingerprint, permanently identifying the make, model, year, engine, plant, and production sequence of that specific vehicle.

Where to find your VIN

Your VIN shows up in a few places:

  • Dashboard: Look through the windshield at the driver's side. The VIN plate sits at the base of the windshield and is visible from outside the car.
  • Door jamb: Open the driver's door and check the sticker on the door frame or B-pillar.
  • Registration: Your state registration document lists the VIN.
  • Insurance card: Most insurance cards include it too.

What does a VIN tell you?

A VIN encodes the country of origin, manufacturer, vehicle type, body style, engine, model year, manufacturing plant, and production sequence. Each of the 17 characters has a specific meaning defined by the ISO 3779 standard, which NHTSA adopted for all US-registered vehicles made after 1981.

Is this VIN decoder free?

Yes. It runs on the NHTSA vPIC API, a free public service from the US Department of Transportation. No cost, no account, no usage limits for personal lookups.

Does this work for all cars?

It covers US-registered vehicles built from 1981 onward. Vehicles made before 1981 used shorter, non-standardized VINs that the NHTSA database does not include. Vehicles built only for non-US markets may come back with limited or no data.
