Michigan is one of the most permissive states in the country, allowing any darkness on all windows as long as the top 4 inches of the front side windows stay completely clear. That top clear band is the only real restriction, and everything below it on front, back, and rear windows can be as dark as you want. For anyone who wants a full dark build, Michigan is about as close to a free pass as you'll get.

Any darkness below that band.
A first offense is typically $100–$200 civil infraction. Repeat offenses can cost $200+. Fix-it tickets are available, giving you time to remove or replace the film.
Your car's factory glass already blocks some light (usually around 70-80% VLT). When you add tint film, the combined VLT is lower than the film alone. For example, 35% film on 75% factory glass gives you about 26% combined VLT. The calculator above does this math for you.
