New York requires 70% VLT on front side windows for all vehicles, which is among the strictest in the nation and leaves almost no room for visible film. Sedan back side windows carry the same 70% limit, though rear windows are unrestricted on all vehicle types. SUV owners at least get the benefit of any darkness in the back, making the rear windows the one place to get creative.

Your car's factory glass already blocks some light (usually around 70-80% VLT). When you add tint film, the combined VLT is lower than the film alone. For example, 35% film on 75% factory glass gives you about 26% combined VLT. The calculator above does this math for you.
