This depends on your BMW's model and year. On most 3 Series, 5 Series, and X models (2010+), the sticker is on the driver's door jamb or B-pillar. On older BMWs and some M models, it's on the underside of the hood or on the strut tower in the engine bay.
The sticker is small and says the color code next to a paint bucket icon or the word "Farbe". If your BMW was built in the last 10 years, start with the driver's door jamb. If it's older, pop the hood and check the strut tower area on the driver's side.
BMW paint codes are 3 to 4 characters, usually numeric like 475 (Black Sapphire Metallic), 300 (Alpine White), or alphanumeric like A96 (Mineral White Metallic). Newer BMW colors sometimes use a letter-number combo while classic colors tend to be all numbers.
BMW also offers BMW Individual colors, which are special-order paints with unique codes that aren't in the standard catalog. If you have an Individual color, the code still follows the same format but the paint may need to be special-ordered rather than mixed from stock formulas.
The code on the sticker might include additional characters for the interior color. Your paint code is the one labeled "Farbe" (German for color) or just the color icon on newer label formats.
Not every BMW puts the code in the same spot. Here's where to look for each model:

Depends on the model. Most BMWs made after 2010 have the sticker on the driver's door jamb or B-pillar. Older models and some M cars have it under the hood on the strut tower. Check both spots.
Farbe is German for color. The code next to "Farbe" on your BMW's sticker is your exterior paint code. You might also see "Polster" which is the interior trim code. Ignore that one for paint.
BMW Individual is a special-order paint program with exclusive colors not in the standard lineup. These use the same code format but the paint usually needs to be special-ordered. If your code doesn't appear in any standard BMW color list, it's likely an Individual color.
On the 2018+ X3 (G01), check the driver's door jamb for a label with a paint bucket icon and a 3-character code. On the older F25 X3, it's typically on the strut tower in the engine bay.
