What is VLT?

VLT (Visible Light Transmission) = how much light passes through your window. 100% = clear glass, 5% = limo dark. Each state sets a minimum VLT. Your tint must allow at least that much light through.

What Car Owners Say

Real users who checked their tint laws before installing

Checked Texas tint laws before my appointment and found out 25% front is the limit. Used the AI preview to see exactly how 25% looks on my Camaro. Saved me from getting a ticket with the 15% I originally wanted.

Marcus T.Verified

The VLT calculator is a game changer. I didn't realize my factory glass already blocks some light. The combined VLT showed my 35% film would actually be 26%, right at the limit for California. So glad I checked first.

Jessica L.Verified

I run a tint shop and I send every customer here before their appointment. They can check their state's laws and preview how different levels look on their car. Makes consultations so much faster.

What is VLT and why does it matter?

VLT stands for Visible Light Transmission, the percentage of visible light that passes through your car's window glass plus any applied film. A 70% VLT window lets through 70% of light (nearly clear), while a 5% VLT window blocks 95% of light (limo dark). State tint laws set a minimum VLT for each window position, meaning your tint cannot be darker than the legal threshold. The catch: factory glass already has a VLT of around 70–80%, so when you add a 35% film to 75% factory glass, your combined VLT is only about 26%. Much darker than you might expect.

Why do tint laws vary by state?

Each state sets its own window tint regulations, resulting in significant variation. California and New York require 70% VLT on front windows (very strict), while Texas allows 25% and many states like Ohio, Arizona, and Florida have limits between 28–50%. Rear windows are typically less restricted. Most states allow any darkness behind the driver. The variation means a tint that's legal where you bought your car may be illegal if you move or drive across state lines. Always check before installing, and especially before a road trip.
